Wilshere to take van Persie’s Arsenal number

Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere is to be given the No. 10 shirt soon to be vacated Robin van Persie when the striker moves to Manchester United, the Daily Mirror has reported. It had been expected that Germany international Lukas Podolski would wear the No. 10.

Arsene Wenger, the Arsenal manager, is said to have approved the switch that sees Wilshere give up the No. 19 shirt. Podolski has worn the No. 10 at his former clubs and often for the German national team but stepped aside in what the Mirror calls a show of faith in England international Wilshere.

Wilshere’s recent career has been decimated by injuries, with the entirety of last season coming and going before the 20-year-old was fit enough to make an appearance for the club. A stress fracture to his ankle and then a back injury were the major complaints that kept Wilshere out of action, with his start to the new season also delayed by injury.

Arsenal’s No. 10 shirt will forever be associated with Dennis Bergkamp, the Dutch forward who wore it with distinction between 1995 and 2006.
