Gareth Barry has challenged his Manchester City teammates to return to their best form when Arsenal visit the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League on Sunday, the
City have found themselves relatively off the pace thus far, picking up eight points from a possible 16 and drawing both of their away games. By contrast, Chelsea are unbeaten at the top of the table with 10 points, while Arsenal are a place above City on goal difference.
The Premier League champions were also left deflated after a late Real Madrid comeback denied them victory in their opening Champions League group game in mid-week. City twice led but were pegged back each time, with former Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo settling the tie in the final minutes.
Barry, who has missed the start of the season through injury – and missed England’s Euro 2012 campaign as well – admitted City have been sluggish so far and laid the blame at the team’s defensive record.
He said: “It has not been an ideal start to the season. We finished last season with a great defensive record. This time we are scoring a lot of goals but conceding at the same time. I am sure as the season goes on it is something we can work on.”
