Chelsea’s Hazard came close to Tottenham move

Only Tottenham Hotspur’s absence from the Champions League prevented them from beating Chelsea to the signing of Eden Hazard, the Daily Mail has reported.

Hazard is quoted as saying that his mind was made up when Chelsea beat Bayern Munich in the final of the Champions League – thereby confirming their place in this season’s competition and pushing Spurs into the Europa League.

Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp made the initial approach to Hazard when Tottenham where third in the table. But by the end of the season they had fallen to fourth, behind Arsenal, and vulnerable to a Chelsea success in the tournament. Chelsea had ended the campaign in sixth place, well adrift of the usual Champions League qualification places.

The Mail adds that when it became clear Hazard was to leave Lille this summer is was thought to be a three-way skirmish for his signature, with Chelsea battling the Manchester clubs, City and United.

Hazard said: “It’s true that Tottenham tempted me because it was a young team which was third in the league. Unfortunately, the end of the season did not go well. They did not reach the Champions League, which tipped the balance.
