Injury to Man Utd striker van Persie played down by van Gaal

The injury suffered on international duty by Manchester United’s Netherlands striker Robin van Persie is not serious, the country’s Coach, Louis van Gaal, has insisted. According to the Guardian, the former Arsenal captain picked up a thigh injury.

Van Persie was substituted at half-time during Holland’s 4-1 win over Hungary because of the injury, but van Gaal stressed it was more of a precautionary measure than anything else. Schalke 04 striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar came on in the place of van Persie.

The Netherlands had already lost one important player from the first team when Arjen Robben was stricken in the warm-up. He was replaced by Jeremain Lens, who capitalised on the opportunity by scoring twice, hitting the woodwork and creating a goal for Huntelaar. Bruno Martins netted the other goal for the Oranje.

Van Persie has made a strong start to life at Old Trafford, hitting a hat-trick against Southampton in his last Premier League appearance before the international break, and scoring on his home debut against Fulham to make it four goals in three games.
