Lampard and Hodgson impressed by Cleverley England show

Frank Lampard and Roy Hodgson have praised the performance of Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley during England’s 5-0 win over Moldova, the BBC has reported.

The 23-year-old Cleverley was making only his second England appearance and started the match as part of a three-man midfield, with the more experienced Frank Lampard and Steve Gerrard making up the rest of the trio.

Hodgson picked Cleverley over his club colleague Michael Carrick, who was introduced as a half-time replacement for Gerrard, and Hodgson felt Cleverley more than justified the decision to select him.

The England manager said: “Cleverley was excellent for 90 minutes and when you watch him, you understand why Sir Alex Ferguson is pleased with him.

Hodgson’s words were echoed by Lampard, who added that Cleverley was a pleasure to play with and spoke of his tender years, suggesting that the best is yet to come from the United youth product.

Lampard helped himself to two goals, the first a penalty given after Cleveley’s shot was handled by a Moldova defender, while Jermain Defoe, James Milner and Leighton Baines rounded off the scoring.
