Liverpool captain Gerrard ready for biggest game against Man Utd

Steven Gerrard has described the upcoming match between Liverpool and Manchester United as the biggest game in world football, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The Reds captain accepted that the fixture between Real Madrid and Barcelona in La Liga is a contender for the title too, but the clash between two North West rivals just edges the game that is known as el Clasico.

Gerrard is a veteran of meetings with Man Utd, and believes that when the sides meet this time the supporters will have an even bigger role to play than usual, in what is always a febrile atmosphere.

It is Liverpool’s first home game since the release of the report into the Hillsborough tragedy, with a series of events planned to mark the findings.

Liverpool have also yet to win at home under new manager Brendan Rodgers and Gerrard has called for the team to break their Anfield duck and find some much-needed consistency.

He said: “For me, it’s the biggest because the Premier League is the biggest league in the world and these are the two most successful clubs. I’m not being biased when I say that – I think Liverpool versus Man U is the biggest game. Maybe Barca and Madrid is up there close to that, but for me it’s still this one.

It’s a massive game – we’re looking for our first win of the season and there would be no-one better for us to start getting three points on the board against. Hopefully then we can go on a run of winning games and move up the league because our start to the season has been inconsistent.

The fans are going to play a big part on Sunday. We need them to make as much noise as they can and get behind us. Hopefully the players can perform to our level and it can be a fantastic day that everyone can remember for the game and we can put a good show on for them.
