Friedel was in superb form on Sunday against Queens Park Rangers, making a string of saves to keep Spurs in the contest against their London rivals. Tottenham failed to register a shot on target in the first-half but QPR peppered Friedel’s goal with attempts, with the former Aston Villa goalkeeper a match for all but Bobby Zamora’s 33rd minute strike.
Tottenham eventually fought back with two second-half goals inside as many minutes, the first an Alejandro Faurlin own goal after a Steven Caulker header from a Gareth Bale corner, with the winner coming from Jermain Defoe converting the rebound after Bale’s shot hit the crossbar.
After the match, Villas-Boas was effusive in his praise for Friedel. He said: “We’ve made Hugo alert that whenever Brad has a bad game we won’t pull a change. These things need to be taken very carefully…At the moment we are paying respect for a player who is performing very well and at the right time – if needed or not – we will think about it.”
