Man City captain Kompany backs Hart in criticism spat with Mancini

Vincent Kompany has agreed with Joe Hart’s criticism of the Manchester City players after the Premier League champions twice threw away the lead against Real Madrid in the Champions League, the Guardian has reported. City manager Roberto Mancini had previously admonished Hart for speaking out of turn.

The newspaper adds that while Mancini agreed with the point Hart was making, he did not feel the goalkeeper had the authority to speak out against his teammates in such a manner. Mancini pointedly remarked that he was the one who would criticise the team when it was warranted, not Hart.

City twice led at the Santiago Bernabeu only to be pegged back and eventually surpassed by the champions of Spain. Edin Dzeko opened the scoring, with full-back Marcelo equalising, while Aleksandar Kolarov put City in front again. Karim Benzema restored parity for a second time before Cristiano Ronaldo put Madrid in front in the dying minutes.

Kompany however made no effort to answer back to Hart’s complaints, with the skipper instead relieving Hart of any culpability for Ronaldo’s winning goal. He added: “It’s just regrettable because we had a good chance to win the game. You won’t hear me moan or being silly about it. But it was only the first game in the Champions League and there are plenty more to come.
