Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany cannot wait to face Real Madrid in the Champions League, the BBC
City meet La Liga champions Madrid in their first Champions League contest of the season at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday. With the group also containing the champions of Germany and Holland – Borussia Dortmund and Ajax respectively – the first stage will see a number of meetings between prestigious sides.
Rather than shy away from what has been described as the most difficult group in the competition, Kompany is welcoming the opportunity to pit himself against some of the continent’s best players.
He said: “Games like this are why you are in the Champions League. It’s a great challenge. I think we are the sort of team which gets better as the challenges get even greater. It’s perfect for us…I thought it couldn’t get more difficult than last year, but there you go.”
Last season saw City up against eventual runners-up Bayern Munich, Serie A heavyweights Napoli and La Liga outfit Villarreal, with City exiting the competition after finishing third in the group, above only the Spaniards, who were also relegated from Spain’s top flight at the end of the season.
