Man City will not fear Champions League group, Kompany insists

Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany believes that his team have nothing to fear from their Champions League group, despite being placed among tough compeititon for the second year in a row. City will face the might of Real Madrid, Ajax and Borussia Dortmund but Kompany told the Manchester Evening News that he and his players were relishing the challenge.

That is why you are in the Champions League,” Kompany said. “I thought it couldn’t get much more difficult than last season but there you go. It is a great challenge.

I do think we are the kind of team that gets better as the challenge is greater. That is perfect for us. There won’t be any moments where we will be surprised.

Kompany pointed to the additions City had made in the transfer window to add to the quality the champions already possess as proof that they would be better prepared to handle the rigours of the Champions League this season, after last year’s premature exit at the group stage. “It’s been a trend for this team in the last four years to always try to get the best players. With Maicon, (Javi) Garcia, (Jack) Rodwell, (Scott) Sinclair we are just adding a lot of quality to the team.I think it has been done in a sensible way as well, and that is adding to the stability.
