Galatasaray insist they do not fear Premier League side Manchester United, the
Fatih Terim, coach of the Turkish giants and formerly of Italian sides Fiorentina and Milan, added that he is bringing his side to Old Trafford with the intention of taking points, pointing to a famous 1993 match between the two teams that ended in a 3-3 draw and knocked United out of Europe that season.
A year later, United dispatched Galatasaray 4-0 with David Beckham amongst the scorers, and Terim is looking to take inspiration from the first result rather than live in fear of a repeat of the second.
Terim said: “I don’t need to tell you how Manchester United are a big club. We respect them but we don’t fear them. We are going to England for a good result.
“Years ago we made history against them. I believe Galatasaray can repeat that success,” Terim added.
Terim is in his third spell in charge of Galatasaray. The first ran for four years, between 1996 and 2000, and ended with victory over Arsenal in the UEFA Cup final, after which Terim decamped to Italy with Fiorentina, before spending five months in charge of Milan.
A return to Gala beckoned in 2002 before Terim took over the Turkey national team, taking them to the semi-finals of Euro 2008, resigning in 2009 after a poor start to World Cup 2010 qualification. Terim returned to Galatasaray in 2011 and has won four Turkish league titles at the club.
