Man Utd striker van Persie injured on international duty

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie was replaced during the Netherlands’ 4-1 World Cup qualification victory over Hungary on Tuesday evening after suffering a thigh injury, the BBC has reported.

Louis van Gaal, manager of the Dutch national team, insisted after the final whistle that the substitution was a precautionary measure, adding that the injury did not appear serious but that he did not want to take any risks with the fitness of the former Arsenal captain.

Two goals from Jeremain Lens and one each for Bruno Martins and Klass-Jan Huntelaar gave Holland a convincing away victory, with the hosts only having Balazs Dzsudzask’s first-half goal to show for their efforts, while the van Persie injury threatened to cast a shadow over both the national team’s result and United’s next Premier League fixture.

United already had an injury concern over Shinji Kagawa ahead of the visit of Wigan Athletic after the Japan international tweaked his back during training with his international side before their meeting with Iraq. Kagawa however insisted he would not be out of action too long.
