Roberto Mancini has warned Joe Hart to bite his tongue in future after the goalkeeper laid the blame for Manchester City’s 3-2 defeat against Real Madrid in the Champions League at the feet of the players, the BBC
City twice led – through Edin Dzeko and Aleksandar Kolarov – only to be pegged back and eventually surpassed in the dying minutes of the game. Marcelo scored the first equaliser for the Spanish champions, before Karim Benzema levelled again in the 87th minute and Cristiano Ronaldo put Madrid in front for the first time with a last minute strike.
Madrid had 29 shots to City’s eight – with 16 of the home side’s efforts landing on target compared to five for the visitors – and Hart had previously performed miracles to keep his team in the game when the tie was scoreless. But having watched as City gave up their advantage twice, eventually ending the match without so much as a point, Hart was pointed in his criticism after the match.
He said: “You can’t go 2-1 up with five minutes to go and lose the game. Who else can we blame? We can only blame ourselves,” with Mancini insisting later that Hart lacks the authority to speak in such tones. Mancini added: “If anyone should criticise the team, I should criticise the team, not Joe Hart.”
