Premier League determined to resist Platini winter World Cup plan

The Premier League will stand in opposition to any attempt to move the Qatar World Cup to the winter months, the Daily Mail has reported. President of UEFA, Michel Platini, has suggested that the tournament, due to be held in the Middle Eastern country in 2022, should be played between November and December.

Platini, who voted for Qatar to host the event, added that the World Cup should not be played in one country alone but across more than a dozen nations, with only the semi-finals and final staged in a single country. Speaking in Monaco, Platini also insisted that if the vote were to be held again, he would cast his ballot in exactly the same way.

The Premier League however did not welcome the suggestion that the World Cup should be held in winter rather than its usual summer billing. Such a schedule change would impact the European football calendar as well as veer from tradition, with a Premier League statement saying: “Our view is that such a proposal is unworkable and unacceptable to domestic European football.
