Platini, who voted for Qatar to host the event, added that the World Cup should not be played in one country alone but across more than a dozen nations, with only the semi-finals and final staged in a single country. Speaking in Monaco, Platini also insisted that if the vote were to be held again, he would cast his ballot in exactly the same way.
The Premier League however did not welcome the suggestion that the World Cup should be held in winter rather than its usual summer billing. Such a schedule change would impact the European football calendar as well as veer from tradition, with a Premier League statement saying: “Our view is that such a proposal is unworkable and unacceptable to domestic European football.”
