Rodgers gives vote of confidence to Pepe Reina

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has declared that he has no issues with his goalkeeper Pepe Reina and sees him as his first choice between the sticks at Anfield.

The Spanish goalkeeper has had a shaky start to the season and has made costly errors in consecutive games, against Manchester City and Arsenal in the Premier League sandwiched by an error against Hearts in the Europa League.

However, according to Goal, Rodgers has refuted suggestions that he could be about to dispense with Reina in the January transfer window.?

“I’ve never had a problem with Pepe,” said Rodgers. “He’s been brilliant for me. He’s a key member of the squad here. Absolutely first class, he’s been. He understands what it is I’m trying to do. He understands the philosophy and he’s a really, really good guy. Off the field, he’s important for the group. He’s a big voice in the changing room and I’ve had no feelings at all that he’s ever wanted to leave. I’ve never felt anything like that whatsoever.”

Since arriving at Anfield from Villarreal in 2005, Reina has established himself as Liverpool’s number one goalkeeper and has emerged as one of the leading senior players at the club, being an ever-present in four of his seven full seasons at the club.

This weekend Liverpool head to Sunderland desperate for a win having made their worst start to a league season since 1963, having endured two away defeats and a home draw so far this season.?
