Rodgers insists Carragher remains vital to Liverpool

Jamie Carragher has a vital role to play at Liverpool, the club’s manager Brendan Rodgers has insisted. The Daily Mirror reports Rodgers as praising Carragher for his leadership qualities, adding that a young player lining up next to the veteran defender will learn a great deal from the experience.

Carragher will play for and captain Liverpool in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday against West Bromwich Albion, with the newspaper claiming that Carragher’s appearances this season will mostly be limited to cup games such as the meeting at the Hawthorns.

But Rodgers believes Carragher can act as a teacher on the pitch for Liverpool’s youngsters. He said: “He’s critical. The likes of Andre Wisdom look up so much to guys like Jamie Carragher. For them to be on the same field as him, and to learn from his experience and leadership qualities is very, very important.

Rodgers added that for all the work he can do with the likes of Wisdom, having Carragher to continue that education on the pitch is akin to learning on the job, another aspect of the development process that Rodgers is unable to impart.

West Brom have already beaten Liverpool once this season, on the opening day of the Premier League campaign. A 3-0 win in Steve Clarke’s first match as Baggies Head Coach – after leaving Liverpool when Rodgers was appointed – saw Rodgers’ reign get off to a shaky start.
