Ronaldo cut a desolate figure when he declined to celebrate scoring twice for Madrid in a La Liga match shortly before the break for international fixtures, later claiming his lack of enthusiasm at bagging a brace was down to feeling “sad” about certain matters relating to the club.
His comments caused a flurry of rumour and speculation, with Manchester United said to be working out the financial details of a bid to return Ronaldo to the club he left in 2009. Big-spending duo Paris Saint-Germain and Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala were also said to be interested in ending Ronaldo’s stay in Spain.
But Ronaldo has released a statement via his official Facebook profile in which he insists talk of his displeasure has been greatly exaggerated. He said: “I would like to reaffirm, without worrying about contracts, that my focus is on winning every game and every trophy with my team-mates and all Madridistas.”
