Wayne Rooney has admitted he made a mistake is issuing a transfer request and announcing he wanted to leave Manchester United, Sky
In September 2010, Rooney released a statement in which he questioned the club’s direction and ability to attract big-name players, and hinted that he wanted to leave Old Trafford as he no longer felt the club was capable of matching his ambition.
But only two days later Rooney did a stark about-face and signed a five-year contract extension with the club.
Two years on and Rooney, in a new book that is being serialised in the Daily Mirror, says the statement he realised voicing his unhappiness at what he sees at the club, was the biggest mistake of his career.
Rooney admits however that he was unsure of the decision to release the statement at the time and added it was Sir Alex Ferguson who convinced him to stay at the club, telling the striker that the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence.
