Both defenders have been struggling with ankle injuries, with Cole missing both England matches played over the international period – against Moldova and Ukraine – and Terry playing the former but sitting out the latter. Everton duo Leighton Baines and Phil Jagielka stepped into the respective breaches.
Without the Chelsea players England recorded a 5-0 win over Moldova – in which Terry played the full match despite injuring his ankle late on – and a 1-1 draw at home with Ukraine. Their club colleague Frank Lampard scored three goals in the two games.
The prospect of Chelsea playing QPR is one that invites a great deal of controversy, as Terry has been involved in legal action with R’s defender Anton Ferdinand over allegations of racial abuse. Terry denied all charges and was cleared. It is thought though that Ferdinand will snub the pre-match handshake with both Terry and Cole, who was a witness for the defence in the trial.
