Tottenham recorded their first home victory of the season by beating Queens Park Rangers on Sunday, coming from a goal down to eventually win out 2-1, and Vertonghen believes the confidence gained from that all-important first win at White Hart Lane can help Spurs keep up their good away form under Andre Villas-Boas.
He said: “I think we’re strong enough to do nice things [at Old Trafford]. We’ve played well away from home and we’ve got a lot of confidence especially after this first home win.” Vertonghen added that he played at United’s ground last season, in the Europa League with Ajax, and was impressed with the atmosphere it can generate.
It was February when Ajax went to Old Trafford – and came away with a 2-1 win, thanks to a late goal from Toby Alderweireld. It was not enough to put the Dutch side into the next stage of the Europa League, however, as United progressed to meet eventual runners-up Athletic Bilbao.
