Arsenal assistant Bould admits players looked tired in Champions League defeat

Steve Bould has admitted the Arsenal players looked tired as Bundesliga side Schalke ran out 3-1 winners at the Emirates Stadium in the Champions League, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

Second-half goals from Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Ibrahim Affelay condemned Arsenal to their first defeat at home in Europe in nine years, on the back of a Premier League loss to Norwich City last weekend. The Canaries had previously failed to win a league game this season.

Huntelaar put Schalke ahead after 76 minutes, converting a cross from the on-loan Barcelona midfielder Affelay, while Jefferson Farfan turned provider for Affelay 10 minutes later, teeing up the Netherlands international to convert past Vito Mannone after getting the better of Arsenal left-back Andre Santos.

Bould, in charge on the night as Arsene Wenger served the third game of his three-game touchline suspension, conceded that Arsenal have looked laboured in their last few outings. He said: “We looked jaded. Coming off the international break we haven’t performed. With the ball, we lack a bit of a confidence. We normally create chances and we are not, so we need to correct that. I’m sure we will perform a damn sight better next time.
