Arsenal worry over virus spread

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been forced to forbid his players from shaking each others hands at the training ground after having several of his first team squad members struck down by a contagious virus.

Per Mertesacker was ruled out of the midweek Champions League clash with Olympiakos while Thomas Vermaelen, Francis Coquelin and Theo Walcott are other players that have fallen foul of the illness.

Consequently, the Mirror reports that the Arsenal squad have been banned from shaking each others’ hands while the dressing rooms have been cleaned more regularly than usual in a bid to contain the spread of the virus.

“We have improved the level of hygiene in the dressing room,” said Wenger. “We clean everything. It is funny, but shaking hands is one of the biggest things to spread virus.”

Following last week’s first league defeat of the season at home to Chelsea, Arsenal travel to an in-form West Ham for a London derby where the Hammers lie above their more illustrious counterparts in the table after six games played.
