Arteta a doubt for Arsenal ahead of Champions League tie

Arsene Wenger is facing something of an injury crisis in midfield as Mikel Arteta will undergo a late fitness test ahead of Arsenal’s Champions League meeting with Olympiakos, the Metro has reported.

Abou Diaby has already been ruled out for the next three weeks after picking up a thigh injury during the weekend’s 2-1 Premier League defeat to Chelsea, while the game has come too soon for the recovering trio of Tomas Rosicky, Emmanuel Frimpong and Jack Wilshere, the newspaper adds.

Arteta suffered a minor ankle injury against Chelsea and while the problem is not serious, the game against the Greek champions may come too soon for the Gunners vice-captain. Arteta played the full 90 minutes against the Blues but may not be ready to play Olympiakos, particularly since Arsenal have a difficult trip to West Ham on the horizon in the next round of league fixtures.

If Arteta does not make the match then Wenger will have to field a new-look midfield pairing, with Aaron Ramsey and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain amongst the names vying for a start.
