Aston Villa deny bust-up between Bent and Lambert

Aston Villa have moved to quash rumours of a row between manager Paul Lambert and striker Darren Bent, Sporting Life has reported, after it was rumoured the England international could be sold in January.

Bent has been dropped from the starting XI by Lambert and seen the captain’s armband taken away from him and handed to new signing Ron Vlaar, the Netherlands international centre-back.

It had been speculated that Bent was heading for the Villa Park exit door, with Liverpool and Queens Park Rangers said to be watching on with interest. Liverpool are understood to be in the market for a striker after letting Andy Carroll leave on loan without signing a replacement, while QPR need a boost to pull away from danger, with Mark Hughes’ side currently sitting bottom of the Premier League with only two points from seven games.

An Aston Villa spokesman denied however that an issue existed between Lambert and Bent, saying: “There is not a problem. The manager has explained why he has not selected Darren for the last two games and has said his door is open if the player wants to discuss the matter.
