Chelsea can retain Champions League title, insists Mata

Juan Mata believes Chelsea can accomplish something that has never been done before – retain the Champions League, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

No side has in the era of the Champions League – since 1993 – won back-to-back titles, as although a handful of clubs have won more than one they have always been a few years apart. Chelsea, meanwhile, became the first London club to win the trophy by beating Bayern Munich on penalties in last season’s final, with the game taking place in Munich’s own Allianz Arena.

Mata pointed to the fact that last season, Chelsea had to grind out results against the better sides in the tournament, particularly against Barcelona in the semi-final when a heroic rear-guard action knocked the favourites out of the competition.

The Spain international added that Chelsea won both the Champions League and the FA Cup by playing that way, whereas this year they have more potent attacking weapons to hand having over the summer signed the likes of Brazil international Oscar and Lille’s Eden Hazard.

Mata said: “Last year we won the Champions League and FA Cup, playing as we played. Now I think we can do it better playing even better with Oscar, Hazard or whoever. All we can do is try to play our best but that is what we are doing. I want to improve. I feel I can still do better.
