Chelsea not guaranteed to qualify from Champions League group, claims Di Matteo

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has warned that his side are not certain to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League despite moving to the top of Group E with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Danish outfit FC Nordsjaelland. The victory puts them ahead of Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk on goal difference, who are the Blues’ next opponents in a double header, and two points ahead of Serie A champions Juventus.

However, according to the Daily Telegraph, Di Matteo has attempted to play down the optimism and confidence amongst the Chelsea fans that qualification has now developed and warned that tough challenges lay ahead for his team.

The Ukrainian champions are a very good team, and it’s going to be hard for us to qualify,” Di Matteo said. “For us, it was important to win [against Nordsjaelland]. The scoreline shows four goals scored and none conceded, so that’s pleasing. Away from home, it’s not easy in this competition.

The defending European champions have made a very good start to the season and lie three points clear at the top of the Premier League after their impressive 2-1 victory at the Emirates Stadium over London rivals Arsenal at the weekend.
