Chelsea pair Lampard and Bertrand out of England fixture with Poland

Frank Lampard and Ryan Bertrand will both miss England’s World Cup qualification match against Poland after the Chelsea pair were forced to withdraw through injury and illness respectively, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Lampard and Bertrand had previously been unavailable for Friday’s rout of San Marino at Wembley, with the former struggling to shake off a calf injury and the latter absent due to a bout of illness.

Bertrand had reacted angrily to suggestions he was ruled out because of a cold, insisting his problem was more serious than that in a message on Twitter that contained an expletive. Bertrand has since deleted his account.

Roy Hodgson will also be without Theo Walcott, who suffered a chest injury in a collision with the San Marino goalkeeper. The Mirror adds that Michael Carrick is expected to continue in midfield in place of Lampard, but offers no suggestion as to who will start in Walcott’s place. Tottenham Hotspur winger Aaron Lennon was the player brought on as a substitute when Walcott was taken off.
