Ahead of the meeting of Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea, Spurs defender Steven Caulker has revealed that he was rejected as a youngster by Chelsea and uses that pain as motivation to succeed to this day, according to the
Caulker was a Sunday league player, he told the newspaper, and had trials with a number of clubs of which Chelsea was one. But after playing for the Stamford Bridge side out of position in central midfield, he was told the club would not be offering him a contract.
Unlike many of his contemporaries Caulker is not the product of the academy system, with the 20-year-old until relatively recently playing non-league football towards the very bottom of the football pyramid. It was only in the season 2007-08 that he was signed by Tottenham.
Caulker spent last season on loan at Swansea City in an effort to become more acclimatised to Premier League football and, having returned to Tottenham for the 2012-13 campaign, has begun to establish himself under Andre Villas-Boas.
