Roberto Di Matteo has thanked Petr Cech for making a crucial save on Tuesday evening during Chelsea’s Champions League victory over Nordsjaelland, the BBC
Cech turned away an effort from Joshua John as Chelsea held a precarious 1-0 lead, with the home side cranking up the pressure on the Champions League holders. Chelsea went on to win the game 4-0, adding to Juan Mata’s opener goals from David Luiz and Ramires as well as a second strike from the Spain international.
But it could all have been so different had Cech not stopped John’s goal-bound attempt, Di Matteo noted. He said: “We were looking for that second goal to close the game off. They had one good chance with Petr’s crucial save, and a couple of half-decent chances.” Chelsea were struggling to put the game to bed at that point, missing a series of presentable chances, until a late flurry gave the scoreline what both Di Matteo and the BBC agreed was an unfair gloss.
Chelsea now top Group E by virtue of a better goal difference than Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk, with both clubs level on four points. Shakhtar drew 1-1 with Juventus in Italy at the same time Chelsea beat Nordsjaelland.
