Di Matteo keen to keep attention on Champions League campaign

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has insisted that his thoughts are firmly on Chelsea’s tricky looking Champions League trip to Shakhtar Donetsk rather than Sunday’s heavyweight Premier League clash with Manchester United.

The defending European champions could take a vital step towards qualification from Group E with victory at the Donbass Arena but with the crucial Manchester United fixture on the horizon, some have suggested that Di Matteo could be tempted to rotate his team for Tuesday night’s European clash.

However, according to the London Evening Standard, the Chelsea supremo has refuted such suggestions.

“I won’t think about Manchester United, only this game,” said Di Matteo.

“We’ve got to focus on it, try to win the game and that’s a big, big boost for our campaign in the Champions League.”

“There are always knocks and bruises and maybe some fatigue as well considering the majority of our team have been away on international duty,” the Italian continued.

“Some of them have played two games for their country. All these things are things to think about.”

Following their impressive 4-2 comeback victory on Saturday at London rivals Tottenham, the Blues currently top the Premier League, four points ahead of the two Manchester clubs. Indeed, Di Matteo’s men have only dropped two points in their eight league games to date, coming in the goal-less draw at QPR in September.
