Everton boss Moyes gave Neville dressing down over diving

Phil Neville was the subject of a half-time rollicking from Everton manager David Moyes after the Toffees captain was booked for diving in the Merseyside derby against Liverpool, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Moyes was vocal in his contempt for diving in the week leading up to the match, speaking specifically about Liverpool striker Luis Suarez and his propensity to go to ground easily – which led to Suarez’s exaggerated diving celebration, landing at Moyes’ feet, after Liverpool’s opening goal.

Neville saw yellow for tumbling under little pressure when he received the ball just outside the Liverpool penalty area and saw little options for a pass, instead going to ground under barely a hint of contact from Daniel Agger. Referee Andre Mariner immediately showed Neville a yellow card, leading to chants of “Are you watching David Moyes?” from the away supporters.

Moyes was indeed watching and at half-time told Neville in no uncertain terms that we he did was unacceptable, as Neville himself revealed. He said: “It was a stupid thing to do. I don’t often find myself in that position and I thought Daniel Agger was going to take me out. But I got a good kick up the backside at half-time as I couldn’t commit to tackles in the second half. I’ll take the rollicking and I won’t do it again, that’s for sure.

The manager added: “I said to him it’s completely wrong, you don’t do that.
