Ferguson fears Evans may increase Man Utd’s defensive worries

Manchester United are sweating over the fitness of central defender Jonny Evans according to the Daily Telegraph, after the Northern Ireland international played through injury in Tuesday night’s scrappy Champions League victory over CFR Cluj and appeared to be limping at times. Sir Alex Ferguson has already been given a defensive headache due to the long-term injuries to captain Nemanja Vidic, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.

Jonny got injured on Saturday with a dead leg,” Ferguson said. “He’s got five days now to recover for Sunday and hopefully he’ll be OK.

Should Evans fail to recover in time for Sunday’s trip to Newcastle and their Senegalese strike duo of Papiss Cisse and the in-form Demba Ba, then Ferguson will have the choice of either moving Michael Carrick back into central defence to partner Rio Ferdinand or hand a Premier League debut to youngster Scott Wootton.

Following their first defeat at home to Tottenham in 23 years, United lie third in the Premier League table after six matches played, three points behind league leaders Chelsea.
