Liverpool assistant adamant focus is on Europa League not Merseyside derby

Liverpool assistant manager Colin Pascoe believes that the Merseysiders are fully focused on Thursday night’s Europa League clash with mega-rich Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala, despite the looming shadow of the Merseyside derby three days later.

With all the talk of Sunday’s fixture with in-form Everton at Goodison Park, Liverpool’s Europa League campaign has slipped under the radar somewhat, particularly with manager Brendan Rodgers set to rotate his side for the visit of Guus Hiddink’s men.

However, according to the Independent, Pascoe remains confident that the players are not looking beyond the next fixture.

With the next game, it is always the same,” said the assistant boss, who followed Rodgers to Anfield from Swansea.

The boys are looking forward to Anzhi. Everton against Liverpool is a massive game but it hasn’t been talked about and isn’t being thought about at the moment. We are thinking just purely about the game tomorrow.

Following their 3-2 defeat to Udinese in their last European fixture, the Reds are in need of three points if they are to remain confident of qualification into the knockout stages.

Anzhi arrive in England in red-hot form, unbeaten since early September and top of the Russian league with an attack spearheaded by legendary Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o.
