Southampton v Fulham – Match preview and team news

Nigel Adkins’ Southampton side welcome Fulham to St Marys looking to reproduce the performance that brought them their first league win of the season in their last home match against Aston Villa.

Adkins has come under fire for his team’s attacking style, which though pleasing on the eye has ensured the Saints have the worst defensive record in the league so far this season, though they currently sit just outside the drop zone in 17th place.

Adkins has the luxury of a fully fit squad to choose from barring Jack Cork’s long-term unavailability due to injury. Centre-back Jos Hooiveld is fit again after limping off in his side’s 6-1 defeat to Arsenal and he could replace Maya Yoshida in the heart of the Saints defence.

Fulham picked up their first away win of the season against Wigan in their last trip on the road and will travel to the South Coast confident that the home side’s attacking nature will provide space for the Cottagers’ attacking talents to flourish.

Unfortunately, Martin Jol looks set to be without Dimitar Berbatov due to a hip injury while Mladen Petric, a goalscorer in last week’s home defeat to Manchester City is doubtful with a calf problem. Elsewhere, Kieran Richardson is fit to return while Kerim Frei and Philippe Senderos could feature on the substitutes bench after making their returns from injury for the club’s Under-21 side.
