Sturridge to leave Chelsea to boost England chances

Daniel Sturridge is ready to leave Chelsea in an attempt to boost his chances of gaining a regular place in Roy Hodgson’s England squad, the Daily Mirror has reported.

Sturridge has rarely featured under Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo this season, making only two substitute appearances so far in the Premier League and missing out on the England squad to play San Marino and Poland in a World Cup qualification double-header, having previously appeared against Ukraine earlier in the autumn.

The Mirror adds that Chelsea could be open to the prospect of Sturridge leaving Stamford Bridge in January as they seek to free up funds for the potential signing of Atletico Madrid striker Radamel Falcao, who is valued by his club at almost £50m.

Sturridge had wanted to leave Chelsea over the summer, the newspaper reveals, but only on a permanent basis, causing the collapse of a mooted loan switch to Liverpool late in the transfer window. A fee of £12m is likely to be required for the Champions League holders to sell the England forward.
