Arsenal boss Wenger impressed by Wilshere

Arsene Wenger has lavished praise upon Jack Wilshere after the midfielder starred in Arsenal’s Champions League victory over Montpellier, Sky Sports has reported.

Wilshere scored the opening goal of the game, with Lukas Podolski wrapping up the points and with it confirming Arsenal’s progression to the next stage of the competition. The goal was Wilshere’s first since returning from a long-term injury lay-off – indeed, it was Wilshere’s first goal since November 2010, when he netted against Aston Villa at Villa Park in a 4-2 Arsenal win.

Having spent much of the two years since his last strike out injured with a succession of ankle, knee and back problems, Wilshere returned to action earlier this season and has slotted into the Arsenal first team, playing five times for his club and making a brief international appearance during England’s defeat to Sweden earlier in November.

Wenger revealed that he was pleased Wilshere displayed his goal scoring abilities against Montpellier. The manager added: “He’s getting strong physically. Tonight he got in the box – he’s the complete midfielder you know. I believe he can defend well, attack well and these kinds of matches will give him confidence.
