Despite signing French international Olivier Giroud in the summer, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is keen to add to his attacking options by making a move for Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, The
The Schalke forward bagged 29 goals in the Bundesliga last season and Wenger has been impressed with the overall attributes Huntelaar possesses. After Robin van Persie’s £24m move to Manchester United this summer, the Gunners brought in Giroud to produce the same goal threat. The Montpellier forward has begun to find his goal touch, but may find his position under threat with the news of Huntelaar’s arrival.
Huntelaar has been reportedly interested in a move to the Emirates Stadium for some time, but the international rivalry between him and Van Persie had prevented such an option. However, with Van Persie at pastures new, the gap has opened for Huntelaar to move to the Premier League.
The Dutchman’s contract expires at the Veltins Arena at the end of the season and that could open the door for a cut-price move to Arsenal. Wenger has been linked with a loan move for former striker Thierry Henry as cover for Gervinho and Marouane Chamakh, who are both at the African Cup of Nations in January.
Huntelaar would provide a permanent challenge to Giroud as the main striker for the Gunners and could pave the way for Chamakh to leave the Emirates Stadium, with the Moroccan international hoping to remain in the Premier League if he leaves Arsenal.
