Christian Benteke, whilst speaking to the Daily
The 21-year-old Belgian centre-forward said: “Arsenal are the club I love, I like their philosophy of selecting young players and, besides, they had Thierry Henry.
“For me he is the best player in the world and was my boyhood idol. I’m not afraid of making enemies at Villa by saying I love Arsenal.”
Benteke, who scored for Belgium in their midweek international friendly against Romania in Bucharest, has scored two goals in eight league games for the Midlands club and has supplanted Darren Bent as the first choice striker at Villa Park. He cost Aston Villa £7.75m when he moved from Genk at the end of the summer and in his short career has played for five different teams.
He went on to say: “When I joined Villa I didn’t know where they played. I thought they were a London club!
“One can say worse things. I’m a Villa player for now. They’re the right club at the right time.”
The Congo-born player scored 42 goals in 109 league games in Belgium and won the Jupiler Pro League with Standard Liege in a play-off in 2009 in a team that also included Everton’s Marouane Fellaini.
