Chelsea have begun talks with Shanghai Shenhua over a potential loan return for their former centre-forward Didier Drogba, the BBC
Drogba left Stamford Bridge over the summer, having scored the penalty that won the Champions League with his last kick as a Chelsea player. Drogba had previously scored the equalising goal late in the game that took the match against Bayern Munich into extra-time.
After much speculation as to his next move Drogba agreed a deal with the Chinese side, who already employed his former Chelsea teammate Nicolas Anelka. Thus far Drogba has eight goals in 11 games for Shenhua but has asked for special dispensation from FIFA to move clubs outside the transfer window, which does not open until January 1.
Drogba is seeking match action in an effort to prepare for the Africa Cup of Nations, which begins on January 19. The Chinese season has however ended, leaving Drogba with the prospect of not playing a match for two months before he leads out the Ivory Coast at the tournament.
Chelsea meanwhile are in need of a striker after Daniel Sturridge picked up an injury, while Fernando Torres continues to struggle for form. FIFA are considering Drogba’s request.
