Di Matteo calls for perfect Chelsea performance against Shakhtar

Roberto Di Matteo has warned his Chelsea players that they cannot afford any slips against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League on Wednesday, adding that the holders of the competition are reliant on their home form to progress to the next stage, the Daily Mail has reported.

Chelsea go into the match in a precarious position in Group E, sitting in second place behind Shakhtar, three points adrift, but only a single point ahead of third-place Juventus. The Italian side meet Nordsjaelland in Turin at the same time Chelsea play Shakhtar, and if Juve pick up three points and Chelsea do not the two teams will swap positions in the table.

With such little margin for error Di Matteo has moved to focus the minds of his players, with the manager attempting to ward off any individual mistakes that could cost the side greatly and disputing claims that the club’s new style of play employed this season has left them more vulnerable defensively than in the past.

Di Matteo said: “We have to play a perfect game but we are strong at home and we have players with experience who have been through it before.

Our style is changing. But you look at the goals we have conceded in the Champions League and we have many players behind the ball. It’s not like we’ve been caught out. We’ve had some individual mistakes but when we’re fully focused we’re a very good team.
