Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has publicly blamed Nani for his side’s concession of a late penalty that saw his side pegged back to 3-3 in their League Cup fourth round tie with Chelsea.
The tie would go into extra time where two goals from Daniel Sturridge and Ramires would send the European champions through to the Quarter Finals, after United had been seconds away from a victory given to them by goals from Ryan Giggs, Javier Hernandez and ironically, Nani.
However, according to the
“We gave the ball away for the third goal having been in complete control of the match at that point,” said Ferguson.
“All we needed to do was see the game out with good possession. Nani is experienced but he’s player who wants to beat men and I often discourage him from that. In that situation, if we’d kept the ball at the corner flag, the game’s over.”
Chelsea will next travel to face Leeds and former owner Ken Bates in the Quarter Finals while Manchester United, having cut the gap at the top of the Premier League between the two sides with their 3-2 victory at Stamford Bridge in their previous encounter, will begin preparations to face Arsenal on Saturday lunchtime.
