Hodgson happy with England World Cup play-off place

Roy Hodgson has revealed that after England made a hesitant start to their campaign to qualify for the 2014 World Cup, he would be happy to see his side simply obtain a place in the play-offs for the competition in Brazil, the Daily Mail has reported.

England are currently two points shy of group leaders Montenegro, having dropped points against Poland and Ukraine. England drew 1-1 with the latter at Wembley in September and tied by the same score with the former away from home last month.

Group H resumes for England in March 2013 when Hodgson takes his players on a trip to San Marino, closely followed by what could be a vital meeting with Montenegro in Montenegro a few days later. England end their qualification campaign next season with two home fixtures in a row, first against Montenegro and then Poland.

Hodgson said: “The important thing is we get one of those two positions. The group we are in was quite underestimated, but that is often the case.” England have not failed to qualify for a World Cup since USA ’94.
