Juventus 3-0 Chelsea: Champions League exit looms

Chelsea’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League knock-out phase took a major set-back as they were defeated 3-0 by Juventus.

The Bianconeri threatened early on, as close-range Stephan Lichsteiner effort was touched onto the post by Blues ‘keeper Petr Cech. Chelsea couldn’t keep out an enterprising Juventus attack, and Fabio Quagliarella netted in the 38th minute, quick reactions to deflect an Andrea Pirlo shot goalwards.

Chelsea offered occasional threat in attack with the combination play between Juan Mata, Oscar and Eden Hazard, but did not cause enough problems for Gianluigi Buffon in the Juve goal. Fernando Torres came on with 20 minutes to go but failed to make an impact.

In the second half the Blues attacked more, but less effectively, and it was Juventus who went 2-0 up on 61 minutes, Arturo Vidal netting with another deflected shot, this time from Ramires, from outside of the area.

A late Sebastien Giovinco winner on the counter attack followed, and completed the scoring.

The result leaves Roberto Di Matteo’s side in third position in Group E, after Shakhtar defeated Nordsjaelland 4-2. Chelsea now need to win in their final match against Nordsjaelland, and rely on Shakhtar defeating Juventus, if the Blues are to qualify.
