Lucas steps up Liverpool comeback bid

Liverpool’s Brazil international midfielder Lucas Leiva played an hour for the Reds’ Under-21 side as he continues his recovery from injury and bids to regain a place in Brendan Rodgers’ side, the Daily Mail has reported.

Lucas was injured in late August and has not appeared for the first team since. The thigh injury was the second serious problem to afflict the 25-year-old in less than 12 months after Lucas missed a large portion of last season with a knee injury suffered in December 2011.

Having played almost 50 games a year earlier, injury restricted Lucas to just 15 appearances last season. Thus far, Lucas has featured only three times for Liverpool in the current campaign, once in the Premier League and twice in the early stages of the Europa League. Previously, Lucas has never played fewer than 30 games for Liverpool since moving to Anfield in 2007.

Lucas played 62 minutes against Middlesbrough, while Rodgers revealed Lucas could be in contention to play Southampton in early December.
