Premier League the strongest in Europe, says Arsenal’s Wenger

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that despite the struggles of Chelsea and Manchester City in the Champions League this season, the Premier League is the strongest division in European football, according to Sky Sports.

The Gunners are one of only two English sides guaranteed to progress through to the next round of the Champions League, with Manchester United, while Chelsea are a game away from elimination and need a favourable result between Shakhtar Donetsk and Juventus to avoid becoming the first holders of the competition eliminated at the first stage.

Manchester City, meanwhile, are out of the tournament, failing to get out of their group for the second consecutive season and without a win in the Champions League thus far. City faced a group containing Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Ajax, the champions of Spain, Germany and Holland respectively.

Wenger does not feel however that the torrid time of Chelsea and City means the Premier League has become weaker. The Frenchman said: “I would still say England is the strongest, because in England if they want a player, they still get him. As long as that happens you will be the most powerful in Europe.

England is the best, because there’s something more here. It is not only linked with what you see on the pitch, but how you experience football. That is what I believe deeply, and when I speak to the players they say exactly the same.
