Santos facing Arsenal axe for Champions League match

Andre Santos is likely to be dropped from the Arsenal team when Arsene Wenger takes the Gunners to Schalke in Tuesday’s Champions League tie, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

Santos was continually exposed by Manchester United in the 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford on Saturday, and raised the ire of a number of observers when appearing to ask former Arsenal captain Robin van Persie for his United shirt as the players left the field at half-time.

The Brazilian has been deputising for Kieran Gibbs since the England international picked up an injury in early October against West Ham United, playing three league games and once in the Champions League, with Arsenal losing three of the four.

Gibbs has however returned to training after recovering from his thigh problem and looks set to return to the left-back position for Arsenal’s vital match in Germany. Having lost at home to the Bundesliga side in their last European outing, a similar result could see Arsenal struggle to make it out of the group stage of the competition.
