Southampton in the hunt for Spurs ‘keeper Friedel

Southampton manager Nigel Adkins is looking to solidify his struggling defence with a move for Tottenham goalkeeper Brad Friedel, The Mirror reports.

The 41 year old American was dropped at the weekend against Arsenal in favour of Hugo Lloris, as Andre Villas-Boas struggles to juggle the two top goalkeepers. Friedel is nearing his retirement and wants to remain playing at a high level, so Southampton could be an option to see out his playing days. Adkins is looking for stability in the Saints goal after already using three goalkeepers this season.

Young shot-stopper Paulo Gazzaniga currently occupies the Southampton goal, but Adkins has Kelvin Davis and Artur Boruc in reserve if needed. Boruc signed from Fiorentina in the summer, but has faced an internal investigation at St. Mary’s after allegations he threw a water bottle into the home crowd during last month’s 2-0 loss to Spurs. Adkins would look to sign Friedel on a loan deal and make the move permanent in the January transfer window, as he is not convinced by the current three goalkeepers Southampton have.

Friedel had been preferred to Lloris in recent weeks, but the Frenchman was chosen for the weekend’s 5-2 loss to Arsenal in the North London derby at the Emirates Stadium. Villas-Boas may want to keep Friedel, but could face a discontented French number one who only moved to North London in the summer.
