Andre Villas-Boas has warned that Tottenham Hotspur will face a fight to keep hold of Gareth Bale if the winger continues to enter such eye-catching performances as against Liverpool, the
Bale is already said to be on the wish list of La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid, with the Mirror claiming the Wales international’s showing in Spurs’ 2-1 victory over the Reds will have done little to dissuade either club.
Bale first created the game’s opening goal for Aaron Lennon by powering down the left flank and crossing for Lennon to convert, then scored what proved to be the vital second goal from a free-kick that left goalkeeper Pepe Reina bewildered as to the direction of the ball.
The 23-year-old actually got on to the score sheet again later in the match when he and Lennon combined once more, although it was in a different and unwanted fashion – Lennon attempted to clear a corner from the goal line, only for the ball to cannon off Bale – hitting him in the face – and into the back of the net for an own goal.
Villas-Boas said: “We are absolutely amazed with what he can do for us. Tottenham as a club want to keep him here as long as we can, but we understand players like this have propositions, have a market which is the nature of the game.
“ He is scoring more than last season. He is feeling free, getting more of the ball, and the team is creating conditions for him to appear more.
Hopefully he is enjoying it. It is unbelievable his physical freshness, his motivation towards playing, what he does offensively and defensively.”
