Wayne Rooney has identified Robin van Persie as the man to take Manchester United to glory in the Champions League, according to the
Van Persie only made the move to Old Trafford in the summer after spending eight years at Arsenal but already Rooney has tagged the former Gunners captain as one of the most important players at the club.
Rooney said: “When you look at all the teams who have won this competition, they all have had those individuals who can do a bit of magic and win the ¬competition. Robin is like that for us. He’s great for the whole team, he’s our talisman.”
In his short time at United, van Persie has had little trouble finding the back of the net. In 14 appearances for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side, the 29-year-old has scored 12 goals, including a hat-trick away at Southampton, two on a Champions League trip to Cluj and three in his last three domestic and European games.
By contrast, Rooney has six goals in 11 games for his club this season, having missed a portion of the early campaign through injury. It took Rooney until mid-October to open his club account.
