Benitez calls for Chelsea signings

Rafael Benitez believes Chelsea need to be active in the January transfer window as the squad he has inherited is lacking in depth, and has told owner Roman Abramovich as much, according to the Daily Mirror.

By Benitez’s reckoning there are 19 or 20 players in the Chelsea first team, with Marko Marin included despite making only two appearances for the club so far since his summer move from Werder Bremen. Marin made his first appearance for the club in the League Cup victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers in September, and his first league appearance in midweek against Fulham. Both came as a substitute and, in total, Marin has played less than 30 minutes for Chelsea.

Benitez also feels the players he does have need work to become fitter, but have not had the chance to do so because of the hectic schedule they have faced. Chelsea have had to contend with Champions League football and will soon travel to Japan to compete in the World Club Cup, by virtue of having won the Champions League last season.

Anyone can see the team needs to improve a bit physically. But you cannot do that if they play two games in a week,” Benitez said. He added: “I told the owner this. We had a board meeting on Thursday and I explained what I’d seen, told them my ideas and gave them my explanation.
